VINTAGE AUDIO REPAIR

SPECIALIZING IN THE REPAIR OF VINTAGE SUNFIRE AUDIO PRODUCTS

For as long as I can remember, I have always had an intense interest in how things work and how to fix them when they break. Couple that with an equally intense passion for music and you have the reason why I decided to make my living repairing hi fidelity audio equipment. I have been using my skills as a repair technician here in the Seattle area for the last 23 years or so working for various companies.

In 2005, I landed a job as a customer service technician at Sunfire Inc. It was there that I ran into some of the most talented people in the audio industry I have ever met, including a guy by the name of Bob Carver (the creator of Sunfire, for those who do not already know). A couple of years later, I was asked by Bob to join him at Rita's Vintage Audio to help provide support to those customers who needed service for their out of warranty Sunfire equipment.

As they say, all good things must come to an end eventually. In August of 2011, after several years of successful business, Rita's Vintage Audio was closed. This was one of the saddest days of my life, but as it turns out, there was a silver lining to this cloud. Bob was willing to GIVE me all the equipment I needed to start my own shop!!! His only request was that I continue to provide quality service to all those loyal customers who needed to have their vintage Sunfire equipment repaired. I heartily agreed and the rest is history. I am now the proud owner of Flannery's Vintage Audio. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Bob for his faith in me and his incredible generosity. Were it not for him, none of what I have now would be possible. I'm proud to call him both my mentor and my good friend.

How does your Sunfire repair process work?

Each unit is given a complete visual inspection and preliminary tests are performed to determine what faults the unit has developed. I have the expertise and the equipment necessary to bring your vintage Sunfire equipment back to its original factory specs.

The repair process includes installing any and all updates that are known to me. I don’t just fix the obvious problems, I do preventive maintenance as well. I always use factory original parts where possible, but I will use the next highest quality replacement parts if factory originals are no longer available.

After repairing the unit, it is given a second test, and must pass all the specs originally assigned to it by the engineering team at Sunfire. Once it passes all those tests, it spends up to 72 hours on my burn-in bench to ferret out any unexpected problems before it is returned to you. In addition, I offer a 1 year parts and labor warranty* on all my work.

*Warranty service does not include shipping.

    Is it worth fixing?

Typically, yes. I have a 97 percent success rate for the Sunfire products I accept for repair.  There are some exceptions, such as in cases of water damage, severe power surge or if the unit has been dropped, but please give us a call even in those instances and I will be able to give you a better idea of what to expect.

What do I need to know before I send you my Sunfire unit?

    Sunfire Subwoofers:

I can refurbish your Sunfire sub plate and return it to its original factory specs – I call it the 100,000 mile tune up. Please send only the plate assy. Usual cost is $325.00 plus return shipping. Return shipping for the plate assembly is usually around $30.00 (includes $500.00 of insurance).

Removing the plate from the cabinet is easy. There are a total of 12 screws that fasten the plate to the cabinet (3 each on all 4 edges of the plate).  After removing the screws, the plate should come out very easily. Unhook the speaker wires from the speaker and tape up the ends of the wires with some electrical tape.

IMPORTANT!!! DO NOT TOUCH EITHER OF THE CIRCUIT BOARDS OR THE LARGE BLACK CAPACITORS MOUNTED ON THE BACK OF THE METAL PLATE!!

Handle the assy by the metal plate only, as there might be a residual charge on the high voltage capacitors that could shock you  if you touch the wrong spot on the circuit boards. There is a gasket behind the plate, Be careful not to damage it if possible. Please do not send the gasket with the plate assy!!

Wrap the unit in several layers of bubble wrap for shipment, at least two inches on all sides. Please do not use packing peanuts or styrofoam. Both of these materials carry static, not to mention, they make a mess! Make sure the unit cannot move around inside whatever box you choose to ship it in. I recommend using a box 12′ wide, 12″ deep and 9-12″ tall. (You can get this size at your local UPS Store, if you have one close by.) Larger boxes cost more to ship, which is unnecessary.

PLEASE NOTE: IMPROPERLY PACKAGED UNITS WILL INCUR ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES.

Inside the box with the unit, please include a piece of paper with your contact info and a description of the problem you are having with the unit. Also, please include a prepaid return ship label if you would. It saves me loads of time and you a little money.

As far as payment after repairs are complete, I can send you a bill via PayPal or you could elect to send a check for $325.00 inside the box with the unit.

    Sunfire Amps, Receivers and Processors:

I can refurbish your Sunfire amplifier receiver or processor and return it to its original factory specs. I strongly recommend that you package the unit yourself, don’t let UPS or FedEx near it.  I have had so many units arrive damaged from improper packaging techniques the last couple of years from these two companies I’ve lost count.

Wrap the unit in several layers of bubble wrap or packing foam for shipment, at least two inches on all sides. Do not use crumpled paper, styrofoam, etc. Make sure the unit cannot move around inside whatever box you choose to ship it in. If you do not have the original shipping cartons that the amp came in, you will have to purchase new ones. It is IMPORTANT that the amp be shipped in a double box AND BUY THE INSURANCE (insure it for $1500 at least). It’s cheap and well worth the money! PLEASE NOTE: IMPROPERLY PACKAGED UNITS WILL INCUR ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES! Inside the box with the unit, please include a piece of paper with your contact info and a description of the problem you are having with the unit.
